Pillar of Expectation is a sculpture that causes a viewer to question their expectations.

Internally the sculpture has a 3D printed PLA gearbox which is connected to a hand crank on the side of the base. When the crank is turned, the light bulb at the top of the pillar will turn on. But when a viewer meets this sculpture, the handle on the side is broken off. And due to all of the electronics residing in the base of the sculpture, one will question if it works at all.
Pillar of Expectation is a non interactive piece. Thus further propelling a viewer into the mind of questions the functionality of the piece.

PROCESS

The process of creation was pretty simple. Oak and walnut slabs were prepared and glued to create at a blank and were then turned. As for the Pillar, a lot of practice was taken upon the craft of off center turning. Each point of contact was measured to create the ideal design in the center of the pillar.
